В начале XVII в., когда здесь появились первые колонисты из Англии, на континенте обитало около 1 млн. индейцев в составе многочисленных племен. Сражения часто отличались жестокостью обеих сторон: вырезались целые поселения, включая женщин и детей. Например, 5 июня 1637 колонисты из Массачусетса вместе с союзными племенами заживо сожгли в индейской деревне 700 человек в ходе Пекотской войны [ Pequot War], а в 1812 более 300 поселенцев были истреблены в форте Дирборн индейскими племенами под предводительством вождя Текумсе [ Tecumseh].
